For my company’s 25th anniversary, I pitched the concept of celebrating with a company yearbook that detailed the company history, milestones, and what made the company unique – the employees themselves. Over the course of 3 months I designed graphics and distinctive layouts for the content that eventually became a 30-page book.
One of the biggest elements of the book was creating the company logo (REI with a globe over the ‘I”) using photos of employees. I scheduled time with each of the nearly 500 employees and photographed each of them expressing themselves in a way unique to them. For example, people brought a chess board, a bike, and even their dog! I shot the photos from overhead by attaching the camera to the ceiling and controlling it remotely and then painstakingly edited each photo, laying them out into the final logo. This logo was eventually used on a large wall in the common area of our company headquarters.
